Dress code rules in detail
Covered shoulders and knees applies to both men and women. Tank tops, spaghetti straps, short shorts and miniskirts are not appropriate. Capped sleeves, t shirts, modest dresses and walking shorts at or below the knee are fine. Men remove hats and caps before entering. Women may keep hats unless exaggerated. Closed walking shoes are essential for cobblestones, sandals work for outside the cathedral but heels are uncomfortable everywhere in the Colonial Zone. Beach cover ups, swimwear and cropped tops are not appropriate inside the cathedral or for guided tours that include it.
Weekday mass schedule
Monday through Friday the cathedral celebrates two daily masses, at 7.30 AM and at 6 PM. Each service lasts roughly 40 minutes. The morning mass draws around 50 to 80 mostly older locals and parish regulars. The evening mass is similar in size. Outside these two windows the nave is open for tourist visits, with the cleanest windows being 9 to 11.30 AM and 1.30 to 5 PM. Tourists who arrive during mass should sit in back pews and avoid walking down the central nave.
Saturday, Sunday and special masses
Saturday adds a 5 PM evening mass to the 7.30 AM service. Sunday is the busiest day with four masses at 7.30 AM, 9 AM, 11 AM and 6 PM. The 11 AM service is the most attended and most musical, often with a choir. Major Catholic holidays change the schedule. Holy Week from Palm Sunday through Easter brings extra masses, processions and the Good Friday Tenebrae service. Christmas Eve has a midnight mass. The feast of Our Lady of Altagracia on January 21 is locally significant.
Etiquette and how to behave inside
During mass, sit in the back pews or side aisles. Do not walk the central nave or photograph the altar during consecration. Do not talk above a whisper. Leave between hymns or readings, not during a sacred moment. Outside mass, photography without flash is allowed. Tripods are not permitted. Voices should remain low even when the cathedral is empty. Lighting a candle in a side chapel involves a small donation of 25 to 50 pesos and is welcome. Donations to the maintenance box near the side entrance are voluntary.
